Before You Go: Shore Leave Tips for Seafarers
A good sunset plan starts with a safe return to the vessel.
- Confirm shore leave with the Master and your ship agent, including any immigration or port requirements for your port call.
- Agree a clear back-on-board time and add a buffer, because evening traffic and boat schedules can run late.
- Carry your identification, some Indonesian rupiah in cash, and a charged phone.
- Arrange your return ride before you leave, especially at remote spots where taxis and ride-hailing may be limited.
- Tell a shipmate where you are going and when you expect to return.
- Take care with swimming. Tides, rocks, and currents vary by beach.
- Ocarina Beach

Ocarina Beach is part of the Mega Wisata Ocarina area in Sadai, Bengkong, and is described as the only beachfront attraction in central Batam. It is the easiest option if your time is short, since it is only a few kilometres from Batam Centre Ferry Terminal.
The area is lively in the late afternoon, with families, food stalls, and people walking along the water. An entrance fee applies to the park area, and some visitors report that rides and other facilities may be closed in the evening. Treat it as a relaxed waterfront stop rather than a theme-park outing, and check what is open before you go.
Local tip: Arrive around 5:00 pm so you can find a spot, buy a drink, and still be back at the vessel in good time.
- Barelang Bridge

Barelang Bridge is a chain of six bridges linking Batam, Rempang, and Galang. The name comes from the first letters of the three islands. The first bridge, Tengku Fisabilillah, is the best known and a favourite place to watch the sun go down over the water. Crossing the bridge is free, and locals gather here in the evening, often with vendors selling snacks.
The bridge is open around the clock, but there is little shade in the afternoon, so bring a hat and water. Some viewing areas nearby charge a small fee.
Local tip: Mobile signal can be patchy on some stretches, so agree a return ride with your driver before you leave, or ask the driver to wait.
- Nongsa Beach

Nongsa Beach is at the northern end of Batam, about 10 minutes from the airport, with views across the water toward Singapore. After dark, the Singapore city lights become part of the scene.
The public beach is simple. Small stalls sell food and drinks, and a small entrance fee is charged. Visitors have mixed views on how clean it is, and at low tide in the afternoon the water pulls back a long way. If you prefer a more polished setting, several resorts in the Nongsa area have waterfront restaurants and bars, but check whether they welcome non-guests.
Local tip: Check the tide before you go. Low water can reduce the beach and make walking uncomfortable on rocks.
- Melur Beach

Melur Beach (Pantai Melur) is on Galang Island, reached by crossing Barelang Bridge. It is known for soft white sand, calm water, and a quieter feel than the city beaches. It is around 57 km from the centre of Batam, and the drive can take one to two hours.
Facilities are basic, so bring drinks, snacks, and something to sit on. Visitors recommend wearing shoes because of rocks in some areas. Because of the distance, make sure you have a driver for the full trip, as public transport is limited.
Local tip: This is a half-day trip. Leave early enough to enjoy the beach, and plan the return drive before dark.
- Mubut Darat Island

Mubut Darat is a small island off Galang, reached by driving to Sembulang and taking a short boat ride across, about 15 minutes. Visitors describe clear water, coconut trees, and a peaceful atmosphere, and travel from Batam Centre to the jetty takes roughly 40 minutes.
The key point for sunset is the boat schedule. One visitor reports that the last boat from the island leaves around 6 pm, which is close to sunset time. The island also has limited facilities. It works best as a daytime visit, or as an overnight stay if you can arrange it.
Local tip: Ask the boat operator for the return schedule before you cross, and do not rely on getting back after dark.
- Kepri Coral Island
Source: Batam News
Kepri Coral Island is on Pengalap Island in the south of the Galang area. It is a private island with a floating restaurant, water activities, and dome accommodation. Reaching it takes a bus ride of around 1.5 to 2 hours to Kepri Coral Terminal, followed by a boat transfer of about 20 to 30 minutes.
The snorkelling and coral viewing are daytime activities, so a sunset here is realistic only if you stay overnight. Visitor reviews are mixed, including concerns about the animal enclosures, so confirm the current packages and what is open before you book.
Local tip: Because of the travel time, this is better suited to a longer break than a short port call.
Bonus: If Your Vessel Is Near Sekupang
Tanjung Pinggir Beach is about 10 minutes from Sekupang Port and is known as a place to enjoy the sunset. It can be a practical option if your vessel is at or near Sekupang and you only have a short window ashore.
Getting Around Batam
- Taxi and ride-hailing: Convenient around Batam Centre and other busy areas. Coverage may be limited at remote locations.
- Private car with driver: The most practical option for Barelang, Galang, and Melur Beach, since the driver can wait and bring you back.
- Boat: Needed for island spots such as Mubut Darat and Kepri Coral. Confirm departure and return times in advance.
Whatever you choose, allow extra time for the return journey and keep your back-on-board time in mind.
