Electronic Bills of Lading – The Shipper’s Perspective
by Erick Tavares
E-billing (E-bill) is a payment process via the internet with an electronic billing system to send invoices without using paper. E-billing is neatly systematized so that it can be used to generate and send invoices to customers, receive payments, and track related data. This also adjusts to technological developments that occur in the world. One of the advantages for the shipping world is that it can facilitate payment transactions between countries.
The world of shipping is the world of international travel. Distance is one of the challenges in the process of financial transactions and E-bills are a solution. E-bills can improve invoice accuracy, speed up the billing process and improve cash flow. E-bills are created electronically and send invoices requesting payment for products or services provided. They replace paper invoices that are created manually. In the shipping world, E-bills helping charterers and seafarers usually contain the amount due, payment terms, purchase order number, and a link to a secure payment portal, where customers can pay their bill online using a credit or debit card, PayPal, or wire transfer. ACH, or other payment methods.
E-bills process much more quickly than the traditional paper-based billing process, which requires an invoice to be printed, placed in a stamped envelope, and sent by regular mail at various times. Once it arrives, it is opened, paid for, and sent back. E-billing shortens the time between when an invoice is issued and when it is paid, sometimes to as little as a day. For example, in the world of shipping E-bills make it easier to bill directly compared to bringing invoices that have been printed sailing to China from the USA. This takes a lot of time. Via electronics, E-billing eliminates the costs associated with printing, filling out, and sending out paper invoices. It also reduces the number of people needed to process and track payments, which also cuts costs.
In the shipping world, customers and stakeholders tend to trust businesses that offer e-billing more because every cost is displayed and all historical payment data is easily available. Subscribers may also appreciate payment reminders that help them avoid late payment fees, or re-subscribe reminders so they don’t face gaps in service. The use of e-Billing in the shipping world shows that the company is working professionally.
